As a stock price rises, investors can begin selling the position once it reaches the price target range. Investors can either sell it all at the price target or ease out of the position over time at various price targets.

How long do you need to hold a stock before selling it?

There's no minimum amount of time when an investor needs to hold on to stock. But, investments that are sold at a gain are taxed at a capital gains tax rate. This rate changes, depending on whether the investor held onto the stock for more or less than one year.

How long after buying can you sell a stock?

On T+1 day, you can sell the stock you purchased the previous day. If you do so, you are making a quick trade called Buy Today, Sell Tomorrow (BTST) or Acquire Today, Sell Tomorrow (ATST). Remember, the stock is not in your DEMAT account yet.

Can you sell your stock at any time?

You can only sell stocks when the stock exchange is open, or during the pre-market or after-hours. However, it is best to sell during the exchange hours due to additional risks during after-hours trading.

Can you sell a stock as soon as you buy it?

Retail investors can buy and sell stock on the same day—as long as they don't break FINRA's PDT rule, adopted to discourage excessive trading.
