By the 1950s the college had grown substantially and in 1957 Oklahoma A&M became The Oklahoma State University for Agriculture and Applied Science. During the next three decades, OSU would build academic programs to match its new status. Enrollment more than doubled from 10,385 in 1957 to more than 23,000 in the 1980s.

Why did Oklahoma A&M change its name?

On May 15, 1957, Oklahoma Aɪmp;M changed its name to the Oklahoma State University of Agricultural and Applied Sciences, to reflect the broadening scope of its curriculum.

When were OU and OSU founded?

On July 1, 1957, Oklahoma Aɪmp;M College officially became Oklahoma State University. Technical branches were established in Okmulgee in 1946 and in Oklahoma City in 1961, later renamed the OSU Institute of Technology and OSU-Oklahoma City.
