Line is applied to clothing design in two ways: 1) Structurally, and 2) Decoratively. Examples of how line is used in the structural design of a garment are seams, darts, pleats, tucks, and edges. Each of these design features are used in the construction of the garment decided upon by the designer.

Line refers to edge or the outline of a garment and the style line that divide the space within a garment. Line can create visual illusion if used skillfully (Tate, 1998). Line is the simplest and the most important of the design elements. All lines have length and width (Manmeet, 2008).

Woven fabrics have a selvage edge that runs lengthwise along both sides. Pattern pieces drafted for woven fabrics will have a line with an arrow at both ends called the grainline. This line should run parallel to the selvages. Most often, the fabric you receive will not have an even crosswise cut.
