Safety of herbal medicine

Herbal products are usually not evaluated for purity and consistency of active compounds, they also often contain contaminants. Furthermore, it is believed that if a drug is effective, it will not totally be safe and will have side effects. Therefore, herbal medicines as drugs may have side effects, too.

What precautions should be taken by the user before using a herbal product?

Herbal products can pose unexpected risks because many supplements contain active ingredients that have strong effects in the body. For example, taking a combination of herbal supplements or using supplements together with prescription drugs could lead to harmful, even life-threatening results.

Is it safe to use herbal medicines all the time?

Quality issues of herbal medicines can be classified into two categories: external and internal. In this review, external issues including contamination (e.g. toxic metals, pesticides residues and microbes), adulteration and misidentification are detailed.
