(ser-VY-ver) One who remains alive and continues to function during and after overcoming a serious hardship or life-threatening disease. In cancer, a person is considered to be a survivor from the time of diagnosis until the end of life.

Alternate terms are also used such as alivers and thrivers which emphasize living as well as possible. This terminology even extends to previvers, who have not been diagnosed, but survived a predisposition to cancer due to certain genetic mutations.

Other recent statistics on cancer survivorship : About 67% of cancer survivors have survived 5 or more years after diagnosis. About 18% of cancer survivors have survived 20 or more years after diagnosis. 64% of survivors are age 65 or older.
