Scratch repair kits are only designed to fill in surface-level scratches that haven't penetrated the clear coat finish. The kits will work to some extent for minor scratches. In most cases, however, the filling will only minimize the scratch and not completely conceal it.

Touch-up paint pens make the damage look worse 95% of the time. They are unnecessarily hard to use and the results are far from acceptable. Touch-up paint pens are pretty much just for the dealerships and car manufacturers to sell as an additional source of income.

In fact, they can accentuate the scratch and make the area look messy. These pens will not work for scratches that have penetrated the clear coat and gone down to the primer. Because the instructions do not specifically state this, it can create some confusion among the consumers.
