Car insurance in Ireland with UK license

Getting car insurance in Ireland having moved here. To legally drive a car in public places in Ireland you need to be insured (and properly licensed). If you're new to Ireland, and driving with a foreign driver's license, you may have a few hoops to jump through to get insurance.

If you’re driving a company car, it’s your employer’s responsibility to make sure you have the right cover – that would be business car insurance. However, fleet insurance policies often exclude non-UK licence holders, so you may need to get a UK driving licence to be covered this way.

If you have a driving licence issued by an EU or EEA member state you can drive in Ireland as long as your existing licence is valid and you have the proper insurance. If you are resident in Ireland and have a UK driving licence, your licence is no longer recognised in Ireland.
