State minimum car insurance is a minimum amount of liability coverage that your state requires you to have. But the specific coverage amount varies by state. It covers the bodily injury and property damage you cause to others in an accident, but it won't pay for the damages to your car and your injuries.

Auto insurance requirements vary by state but every state requires you to have a minimum level of liability coverage. Liability coverage protects you from being sued if an accident that was your fault causes harm to another person or their property. Liability insurance doesn't cover your own injuries or damage to your own property.

State minimums and coverage types vary, but nearly all states that mandate insurance require liability coverage for property damage and bodily injury. The sole exception is Florida, which only requires liability coverage for property damage, in addition to PIP coverage. New Hampshire is the only state that doesn't mandate car insurance.
