Canada and the commonwealth games


The Canadian team won 54 medals in the first (1930) Games, and 51 gold medals at Edinburgh (1986). Canada's biggest total medal tally was 129 medals in Victoria (1994). Canada has hosted the games four times. The first Games were at Hamilton, Ontario in 1930.

Why is Canada part of the Commonwealth Games?

Canada first joined the British Commonwealth as an independent state in 1931. The modern Commonwealth came into existence in 1949 with the London Declaration, and Canada has played an important role in its evolution. Queen Elizabeth II served as the Head of Commonwealth during her 70-year reign.
