Carbon + hydrogen = methane

Can methane be converted to hydrogen without producing carbon dioxide?

To address this issue, researchers from the Institute of Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have developed a process that extracts the energy content of methane, in the form hydrogen, without producing carbon dioxide.

Is methane a precursor of hydrogen?

Second, methane is a primary precursor of hydrogen. Namely, CH 4 oxidation results in the production of formaldehyde, whose photolysis produces H 2. Firn-air records suggest that the increase in H 2 over the 20th century can be largely explained by the increase in CH 4 concentration 20. Fig. 1: Tangled hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4) budgets.

What is the difference between carbon and hydrogen?

The hydrogen can be used in fuel cells for transportation including trucks, and large-scale energy storage, while the high-quality carbon products are suitable for a wide range of manufacturing applications, such as electronics, medical devices, aerospace composite materials, and building systems.
