Canada car import rules


The documents you'll require to import a vehicle into Canada are:
  • Bill of Sale.
  • Original Certificate of Title.
  • Last copy of registration (for used vehicles)
  • USMCA/CUSMA Certificate of Origin (if applicable)
  • Letter of Gifting with Letter of Appraisal (if applicable)
  • Form 1 – Submitted to RIV.

How old can a car be to import to Canada?

Import Requirements The vehicle must be 15 years old or older based on month and year of manufacturer in order to be admissible into Canada. You must be able to provide proof of admissibility either by the first registration date or by a letter from the manufacturing company.

Is their a 25 year import for cars rule in Canada?

Even Mexican and Canadian vehicles are unable to meet many of our requirements, which is why it can be difficult to import a car from those places unless it's more than 25 years old. Canada's motor vehicle safety standards closely resemble our Federal requirements.

What is required to import a vehicle into Canada?

You must pay taxes and/or duties when applicable to bring your vehicle through Canadian customs. Your vehicle must be clear of any recalls. It must then pass an inspection by the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) in Canada before it can be officially considered imported.

Why can you only import 25 year old cars?

If the vehicle is less than 25 years old and was not originally manufactured to comply with all applicable FMVSS, and/or was not so certified by its original manufacturer, it cannot be lawfully imported into the U.S. on a permanent basis unless NHTSA determines it eligible for importation.
