Cancelling carer's allowance after death

What happens to my Carer's Allowance if my partner dies?

If you are getting Carer’s Allowance (full or half-rate) on behalf of a spouse, civil partner or cohabitant and that person dies, you can continue to get Carer's Allowance for 12 weeks plus any of the payments listed above (if in payment to that person) for 6 weeks after the date of death.

What happens if the person you're caring for dies?

You must tell the Department for Work and Pensions if the person you’re caring for dies. You could be taken to court or have to pay a penalty if you give wrong information or do not report a change in your circumstances. You can still get Carer’s Allowance if you temporarily stop providing care.

How long do you get Carer Allowance for bereavement?

You may get a Carer Allowance bereavement payment if you’re getting both: an income support payment other than Carer Payment not qualifying you for bereavement assistance. We pay up to 14 weeks of Carer Allowance as a lump sum. If you get Carer Payment for a person who dies, you may continue to get this payment after they die.
