Why Pharmacokinetic Studies Are Important.
PK studies allow the characterization of ADME properties of a drug early in development.
They also provide critical information including the impact of food interactions (in orally administered drugs), drug-drug interactions, and organ impairment on the disposition of a drug.
Population pharmacokinetics (termed in the industry as 'Pop PK') is the systemic analysis of compiled data from specific studies or from the entire drug development program.
These analyses are used to better understand the concentration-time course of the drug and to explain potential sources of PK variability.
PKPD modeling typically relies on the use of ordinary differential equations, which describe the rate of change of drug concentration as it travels through the body after administration.
Depending on the mode of administration (oral, IV, subcutaneous, etc.), the drug may or may not go through an absorption phase.
