July 1, 2002 -- Etanercept was significantly better than methotrexate in patients with early but aggressive rheumatoid arthritis (RA), according to results of a double-blind, randomized trial reported in the June issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism.
Methotrexate is used to treat psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, eczema and several other types of skin problems including pemphigoid, pemphigus, sarcoidosis, scleroderma and dermatomyositis. How long will I need to take methotrexate before it has an effect? It may take 3-12 weeks before you notice any improvement in your condition
Methotrexate may cause a number of severe side effects and it should only be used if its benefits outweigh its risks. Potentially fatal opportunistic reactions, such as Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia have been reported. Has caused fetal death and birth defects when used in women who have been pregnant or become pregnant while taking methotrexate.
