Marine ecology is the study of living things in the ocean and how they interact with their environment.
It is an interdisciplinary science that combines biology with physical sciences (e.g. geology, chemistry, oceanography, geophysics, statistics).
The number of marine ecosystems is actively debated.
Although there is some disagreement, several types of marine ecosystems are largely agreed on: estuaries, salt marshes, mangrove forests, coral reefs, the open ocean, and the deep-sea ocean.
An estuary is a coastal zone where oceans meet rivers.
The four ecological principles – maintaining or restoring (1) native species diversity, (2) habitat diversity and heterogeneity, (3) key species, and (4) connectivity - must form the foundation of any ecosystem based planning efforts.
