6) Old English literature, or Anglo-Saxon literature, encompasses the surviving literature written in Old English in Anglo-Saxon England, in the period after the settlement of the Saxons and other Germanic tribes in England (Jutes and the Angles) c.
The earliest written work that is generally considered English literature is the poem Beowulf, making English literature more than a thousand years old.
Some major periods of English literature include: Old English (700-1150 CE), mostly anonymous writers.
Middle English (1150-1485), including Geoffrey Chaucer.
