In 'Inferno,' the first part of the larger work The Divine Comedy, Dante must travel through nine different levels of Hell to save the soul of his beloved, Beatrice.
The white Guelphs were for the strong independence of Florence under the Pope, while the black Guelphs were for a total submission of the City to the Pope.
So, politically, Dante was a sort of “nationalist” of Florence, thinking nobody should rule on Florence but its population (meaning the upper class).
