  • What sound is θ?

The sound /θ/ is a voiceless, dental, fricative consonant.
Touch the back of your upper teeth with the tip of your tongue.
Breathe out, while moving your tongue sharply downward, and let air flow past your tongue and out of your mouth.
Your vocal cords should not vibrate.

  • TIP 1: Try pronouncing the N sound, but with your tongue touching the bottom of your front teeth, and then relax your tongue from that position (allowing air to pass) to create the th sound.
ESL: The 'voiced th' /ð/ and 'unvoiced th' /θ/ sounds are the only pair of English sounds that share a single, common spelling. To pronounce the sounds, the tip of the tongue is placed behind the top front teeth. The friction occurs between the tip of the tongue and the top front teeth.
