  • What are the rules for pronunciation of th?

There are 5 rules that should help you determine whether a th should be voiced or voiceless. between two vowels th is voiced: mother, bother, weather, etc. at the end of the word or before a consonant, th is unvoiced: myth, mouth, mouthful, bath, truthful, throw, etc. when followed by a silent e, th is voiced.2 avr. 2021

  • The TH consonant is a voiced consonant.
This means the vocal cords are turned on as you say this sound, and you should feel a vibration in the throat when you say it.
To pronounce the two TH consonants, the tongue is in a wide shape and it touches the underside of the upper teeth all the way around.
In English, the digraph ⟨th⟩ represents in most cases one of two different phonemes: the voiced dental fricative /ð/ (as in this) and the voiceless dental fricative /θ/ (thing). More rarely, it can stand for /t/ (Thailand, Thomas) or the cluster /tθ/ (eighth).
