The Language B guide provides a description of the nature of the subject, the assessment objectives, and the syllabus and assessment details. The purpose of this teacher support material (TSM) is to help both teachers new to the language B course and those who are currently teaching the language B course to understand the syllabus.
The language B syllabus is organized into five prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization and sharing the planet. Optional recommended topics and possible questions for each theme are presented in the guide, but are not prescribed.
The International Baccalaureate has published a guide for Language B for the Diploma Programme. With a new guide comes new components of assessment and marking criteria. The new Paper 1 is a writing exam worth 25% of the final course grade. Students are asked to write a response to one of three prompts, selecting one of three types of texts.
The course is structured around the five prescribed themes of identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization and sharing the planet. Recommended topics within these themes are offered in the Language B guide, but the topics suggested are neither prescriptive nor exhaustive.
