The Kimbell Art Museum is internationally renowned for both its collections and for its architecture.
The Kimbell's collections range in period from antiquity to the 20th century and include European masterpieces by Fra Angelico, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Poussin, Monet, Picasso and Matisse.
The Kimbell Art Foundation, which owns and operates the Museum, had been established in 1936 by Kay and Velma Kimbell, together with Kay's sister and her husband, Dr. and Mrs.
Coleman Carter.
The museum structure consists of a series of cycloidal vaults enclosing 120,000 square feet of space.
The graceful proportions of the vaults provide a unique method of natural lighting.
The museum, which was built at a cost of $6.5 million, opened in October 1972.
