Old Korean (North Korean name: ?? ???; South Korean name: ?? ???) is the first historically documented stage of the Korean language, typified by the language of the Unified Silla period (668–935). The boundaries of Old Korean periodization remain in dispute.

  • What was the first Korean language?

Despite its unclear origins, it is known that the Korean language has been spoken since 57 BC.
This initial version was known as Old Korean.
There were thought to be three original dialects corresponding to the Three Kingdoms of Korea.

  • What was the Korean language before Hangul?

Before Hangul, Koreans used “Hanja” (classical Chinese characters) as their writing system.
Since Chinese characters represent ideas rather than sounds, hanja failed to adequately express the complexity and nuances of Korean grammar.
This made writing Korean words using Hanja an almost impossible task.

  • Is Hanja still taught?

They are taught in separate courses in South Korean high schools, separately from the normal Korean-language curriculum.
Formal Hanja education begins in grade 7 (junior high school) and continues until graduation from senior high school in grade 12.

  • Is Hanja still taught?

Officially, hanja has not been used in North Korea since June 1949 (and additionally, all texts become horizontally written instead of vertically), because Kim Il-sung considered it an artifact of Japanese occupation and an impediment to literacy.
