Basics and Application of Ground- Penetrating Radar as a Tool

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a geophysical method that employs an electromagnetic technique The method transmits and receives radio waves to probe the subsurface One of the earliest successful applications was measuring ice thickness on polar ice sheets in 1960s (Knödel et al 2007)

INTRODUCTION TO GPR PROSPECTING - Wiley

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) also known as surface-penetrating radar (SPR) (Daniels 2004) is literally meant as a radar to look underground Actually it is used to look into both soils and walls and recently even beyond walls 1 In principle the GPR can be viewed as composed by a central unit a transmitting

What is ground penetrating radar (GPR)?

The advent of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) can be traced back to as early as 1910 when the first patent for this technology was filed. After years of development in radio technologies, digital signal processing (DSP) as well as breakthroughs in the software field, GPR has become a highly valuable tool for many varied applications.

What are the different types of GPR systems?

GPR systems can be classified by the domain in which they work and bythe type of modulation. The first family of GPR systems is the time domain GPR. The principle of a timedomain GPR is to send a pulse at a given pulse repetition frequency (PRF) into theground and then listen to the backscattered echoes.

What is a time domain GPR?

The principle of a timedomain GPR is to send a pulse at a given pulse repetition frequency (PRF) into theground and then listen to the backscattered echoes. In the time domain GPR there aretwo major categories: the amplitude modulated and the carrier free GPR. The first onesends a pulse with a carrier frequency.

FUNCTIONS

REAL TIME SAMPLING

e Cobra Plug-In GPR uses Real Time Sam- pling of the radar signal. Today major manufac- turers use conventional interleaved sequential sampling, giving only a down converted replica of the real signal. e Real Time Sampling allows for 32,000 stacks/second resulting in an amazing 45 dB in- creased signal-to-noise ratio.

Note that only a 30 dB increased S/N-ratio

roughly double the penetration ability of a typi- cal conventional GPR-system.

A low voltage transmitter reduces power con-

sumption and eliminates ringing. e use of power-hungry, high voltage transmitters is no longer needed; in such case transmitter power must be increased 32,000 times to be comparable!

WIRELESS

Wireless Bluetooth connection between GPR

and control unit replaces interfering coax-cables and fragile bre optic links. An Ultra Rugged

Mesa PDA with embedded soware is used for

data collection. Data is stored in standard SEGY geophysical format. e complete GPR-unit plugs into a single SUB-

ECHO Antenna, any selectable model. No need

for bistatic conguration. e SUBECHO-antennas can all be used air- borne and in air-coupled operation and in any type of terrain. No need to cut trail paths any- more, not even in dense bush vegetation were ground coupled snake antennas have problems passing. Just li the antenna above the bushes or in worst case use an octocopter UAV to carry the small and compact Cobra Plug-In.

Wireless operation, hand held data logger, low

power consumption and an air coupled antenna add exibility, ruggedness and durability and the most compact and deepest penetrating GPR- system available on the market.

Maximum penetrations in good conditions, low

conductivity, are listed below: COBRA

ADVANTAGE

In February 2012 we made a

comparison study between the

COBRA PLUG-IN GPR,

a Real Time Sampling GPR, and a conventional Sequential/

Interleaved Sampling GPR,

the GSSI SIR-3000 GPR.

The performance study was made

the same day, on an ice road passing

Lule River and used the same

model antennas.

THE DATA

e data below shows the same

115 m long distance with cut raw

data from the systems, top sample from 200 to 500 ns range and bot- tom sample from 1000 to 1200 ns range. e samples clearly illustrate the advantage of using Real time

Sampling Technology compared to

conventional sampling - Explained by wireless operation, no cables and lower transmitter output voltage (40V vs. 1200V) - Seen as “snow" or “speckle" in the lower sample SIR-3000 data. (45 dB increased S/N-ratio)

- Monostatic antenna for Cobra Plug-in GPR and Bistatic for SIR-3000 (Smeared reections with SIR-3000)

dams is a common application with the COBRA PLUG-IN GPR.

HAZARDOUS VOIDS

?e core of the dam is built up with compressed layers of impermeable soil. Hazardous voids, so called piping, can be detected with GPR. ?e cause of these voids is o?en water ?lled fractures in the bedrock below the dam that sooner or later will erode the core. To prevent further damages in the dam core these voids and cracks must be injected with dense material like bentonite and concrete. ?e radargram above illustrates a 75 m long distance with fractured bed- rock that has created voids in the core of the dam. A?er injection the dam is re-surveyed to insure that injection has been successful and all voids disappeared.
