    While New Orleans' national health ranking has improved over the last decade, the city's black population and other minority groups continue to lag behind national averages in life expectancy, including higher rates of infant mortality, chronic and preventable illnesses, etc.

    Racial differences were observed among non-Hispanic Blacks, who had higher rates in heart disease, cancer, homicide, stroke, accidents/unintended injuries, and infant deaths. These differences were also seen in morbidity, especially in new cases of HIV.

  • What are the healthcare disparities in Louisiana?

    Over one quarter (28%) of Black residents in Louisiana report being in fair or poor general health compared to 19% of those who identify as White and 14% of those who identify as Hispanic. Additionally, Blacks (74%) are more likely to be overweight or obese than Whites (67%) and Hispanics (66%).
