  • What happens to a baby when you are on Accutane?

    Although effective for treating severe acne, isotretinoin is a potent human teratogen. There is an estimated 20%–35% risk for congenital defects in infants exposed to the drug in utero,1 including craniofacial, cardiovascular, neurological and thymic malformations.

  • Can Accutane cause problems in future pregnancy?

    Additionally, Accutane is known to cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not take Accutane. It is important to use effective birth control while taking Accutane and for at least one month after stopping the medication.

  • Does Accutane affect male sperm?

    In studies of 66 men, 30 of whom were patients with nodular acne under treatment with oral isotretinoin, no significant changes were noted in the count or motility of spermatozoa in the ejaculate.
  • Isotretinoin embryopathy consists of severe birth defects associated with first-trimester exposure to the synthetic retinoid isotretinoin (AccutaneTM*, Roche Laboratories, A Division of Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc.), which is used to treat severe, recalcitrant cystic acne.
