How are Japanese language proficiency test sample questions organized?

Sample questions are organized by level, from N1 to N5. One sample question is offered for each test item type. There may be differences from questions in the actual test booklet. N3 is a bridging level between N1/N2 and N4/N5. Linguistic competence required for the JLPT is expressed in terms of language activities, such as Reading and Listening, as shown in the table below. While not noted in the table, Language Knowledge, such as Vocabulary and Grammar, is also required for successful execution of these activities.

How many people take the JLPT?

In the beginning, there were approximately 7,000 examinees worldwide. By 2011, there were more than 600,000 examinees in more than 60 countries. In the United States, more than 7,000 people registered for the JLPT in 2019. In normal years the test is administered at 18 test sites located around the country, on the first Sunday of December.

Do I need a JLPT Certificate if I visit Japan?

Under the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, a JLPT certificate is required for Indonesian, Filipino (approximately Level N5 or higher), and Vietnamese (Level N3 or higher) nurse or caregiver candidates who visit Japan.
