Ever since India attained independence there has been a demand for the introduction of rcgional languages in Government Offices for corr€s' pondence with the Public. In response to this demand, the composite Madras State introrluced, in 19tr8. Telugu for official colrespond.ence in the East Godavali District as an experimental measure. This experiment was continued for a number of vc,rrs. It could not make much head-way, due to various difticulties. Similarly., ihe former I{ydcrabacl GovernmenL also issued orders for carrying on ofHcial correspondence with the Public in the Regional languages of thab state. The Andhra Government also took various measules to encourage the use of I'elugu for oftcial correspondence. After the formation of An,ihra Fradesh, in pursuance of the policy of the State Government to introiluce Telugu as official language progressively and by practicable stages wibhout affecting efEciency or pace of disposal of business, the Andhra Pradesh Government appointed a special olflcer for the introd.uction of Telugit as official langu.ag; in this State. On his recommendation, among other things,'I'elugu was iritroduced in 1D60-61 as medium of corresportdence with the public in the off.ces at Taluk level and below in 20 departments rvhich have much day to day correspondence with the public. Tiris schemc is being irnplemented in all the districts of the State. One of the difflculties poini,ed out by the officers and staff in the offices in rvhich Telugu was introduced is the abscnce of Telugu equivalents for many of the terms used in official correspondence. The need for precision cannot be overemphasised. With the publication of the Glossary of Legislative, Legal and Administratiqe terms this difficulty was removed to some extent. As the Glossary is a voluminous book running into about900 pages, an atternpt has been made in this booklet to bring out a handy
booklet of official phrases which occur in correspondence very fretluently. I hope that this boolCh,i,eJ Secretrtry to Goaernment,
