Much of Act III has to do with determining who will define innocence and guilt. Proctor makes one desperate bid for this authority by finally overcoming his desire to protect his good name, exposing his own secret sin. He hopes to replace his wife’s alleged guilt with his own guilt and bring down Abigail in the process.
At the end of Act 3 , we have Marry Warren , a young girl , previously weak , powerless , and afraid , accuse a grown , married man of witchcraft . This is problematic because those who know the truth have the least power , which sets up the ultimate conflict / dilemma for the final act of the play .
Mary Warren prepares to tell the court that Abigail and the girls made up the stories to try to keep themselves out of trouble. 3. As Elizabeth told the court that she is pregnant, Danforth is willing to spare Elizabeth for a year for her pregnancy which should satisfy John if his purpose is to save Elizabeth.
Giles Corey suddenly shouts that he has evidence that Thomas Putnam is using the trials to get more land. Corey is dragged from the courtroom (and onto the stage), followed by Francis Nurse, Hale, Parris, Hathorne, and Danforth.
