Although this show has received critical acclaim, it has also generated questions regarding how the show’s portrayal of suicide affects young people who watch it.
Objective: The Netflix series 13 Reasons Why (13RW) has sparked controversy due to graphic depictions of youth suicide, bullying, and sexual assault. However, further research is needed examining experiences of the show among youth with psychiatric illness.
Changes in mood were considered the main outcome; the variable was derived from a question asking about feelings of sadness and lack of motivation after watching the show. Overall, 23.7% reported worsening in mood after watching 13 Reasons Why.
