It was recovered and returned to the museum and displayed again in 1991. Oscar-Claude Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting, and the term “Impressionism” is derived from the title of his painting “Soleil Levant” or “Impression, Sunrise,” which was exhibited in 1874.
“Impression, Sunrise” by Claude Monet, was first shown at what would become known as the “Exhibition of the Impressionists” in Paris in1874. This painting is credited with inspiring the name of the “Impressionist” movement. The title of the painting seemed to be chosen in haste for the urgent printing of the exhibition catalog.
Impression, Sunrise depicts the port of Le Havre at sunrise, the two small rowboats in the foreground and the red Sun being the focal elements. In the middle ground, more fishing boats are included, while in the background on the left side of the painting are clipper ships with tall masts.
The art critic and journalist Jules-Antoine Castagnary, who wrote a review in the newspaper Le Siècle in April 1874, stated that the group of Impressionists were a “collective force within our disintegrating age” and that they did not “aim for perfection, but to be satisfied with a certain general aspect”.
