When asked to describe his art, Jean-Michel Basquiat responded with customary aplomb: “rroyalty, heroism, and the streets.”
Basquiat died of a drug overdose on August 12, 1988, in New York City. He was 27 years old. Directed by Schnabel, the biographical indie film entitled Basquiat was released in 1996, which starred Jeffrey Wright in the title role and David Bowie as Warhol, among its star-st cast.
The names of famous Black male cultural figures—music and sports stars including Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Floyd Patterson, and Cassius Clay (Mohammad Ali)—are etched on his canvases as affirming cultural signifiers for Basquiat’s art on his way to stardom.
Basquiat lamented the fact that as a black man, despite his success, he was unable to flag a cab in Manhattan – and he was never shy of commenting explicitly and aggressively upon racial injustice in America. “He was a very complex artist,” says Alvaro Rodriguez Fominaya of the Guggenheim Bilbao.
