The Ten Commandments are not a perfect moral code to any extent; but they are an excellent beginning. They never were meant to be perfect; in fact the Torah expands and elaborates a great deal on the meaning of the Commandments. They are a foundation and were meant primarily as a civilizing effect.
The ten commandments were part of God’s moral law. All these laws served as guardians, guardrails, and teaching tools to help the Israelites understand God’s expectations, and to demonstrate to them that they could never live up to those expectations through their own human efforts. ( Romans 3:20; 5:20; 7:7-8)
Why did God give us the 10 commandments? God gave us the 10 Commandments as a shield for us from pain and suffering. The law has very practical value in this world. God ’s commandments are good (Romans 7:12). And it will always go better for us and for others in the long run if we obey God.
