In the 30 years since Rod Ellis first published the award-winning Understanding Second Language Acquisition, it has become a classic text. This new, fully updated edition continues to provide an authoritative and highly readable introduction to key areas of theory and research in second language acquisition.
Unsurprisingly, in view of his target audience of students and teachers, Ellis devotes most space to second language linguistic development, social and cognitive theories of language learning, and types of instruction; and there is little discussion of universal grammar or the expanding field of neurolinguistics.
Their research was eventually replicated by Milon (1974), who applied their methodology to the analysis of second language acquisition by a five-year-old Japanese child learning English as a second language in Hawaii.
