4. CONCLUSIONS The study of the spectral and radiation sound effects of masks employed by actors performing in the typical an-cient Greek theatre of Epidaurus, has provided some clear evidence for the acoustic function of such masks that were always used during the ancient drama performances by the (male) actors.
The comedy and tragedy masks have also specifically been attributed to two of the nine Greek goddesses, who each was the Muse of a creative expression. (In Greek mythology, a Muse was the protector of an art).
The mouths of the masks were enlarged and designed to make it easier for the actor to talk and for their voices to project to the back of the auditorium. Actors were able to play more than one character because of the masks. When they played other characters, all they had to do was change masks.
