The reports generally compare student (15 year olds) academic performance across countries, or discuss the methodology used to gather the data. The OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) examines not just what students know in science, reading and mathematics, but what they can do with what they know.
In reading literacy, the main topic of PISA 2018, 15-year-olds in France score 493 points compared to an average of 487 points in OECD countries. Girls perform better than boys with a statistically significant difference of 25 points (OECD average: 30 points higher for girls).
The test is typically administered to between 4,500 and 10,000 students in each country/education system. Education systems are regions of a country that participate in PISA separately from the whole country.
