importance of individual experience in assessing the soundscapes of urban environments and identifying a terminology to facilitate an introduction of soundscapes into the planning process Drawing on work from soundscape ecology a way is demonstrated to coalesce these divergent positions
Urban soundscapes emerge naturally as a result of the typical activities that take place in the public area Over time urban soundscapes have evolved Today in many cases road traf?c noise dominates the soundscape often implying impoverishment and dulling of the living environment
This paper explores a soundscape ap- proach in the urban sound planning process. A framework is first proposed for designing soundscape in urban open public spaces, considering four key components: characteristics of each sound source, acoustic effects of the space, social/demographic aspect of the users, and other physical conditions.
A soundscape is the acoustic environment as perceived by humans, in context. The term was originally coined by Michael Southworth, and popularised by R. Murray Schafer. There is a varied history of the use of soundscape depending on discipline, ranging from urban design to wildlife ecology to computer science.
Designing with acoustics at the urban planning scale does not seem to be a traditional approach. However, understanding the impact that urban processes produce over the landscape and the natural systems within it is a relevant aspect to consider when planning urban development.
