Canada is divided into 10 provinces and three territories. The majority of Canada's population is concentrated in the areas close to the Canada–US border. Its four largest provinces by area ( Ontario, Q?, British Columbia, and Alberta) are also its most populous; together they account for 86.5% of the country's population.
The most populous territory in Canada is the Northwest Territories, with a 2016 population of 41,462 people (0.1% of Canada’s population). The least populous province in Canada is Prince Edward Island, with a 2016 population of 142,907. The least populous territory in Canada is Yukon, home to 35,874 people.
Prince Edward Island is also the smallest province by land area, followed by Nova Scotia. Although Prince Edward Island has fewer people than any other province, its population is more than triple that of all three of Canada's vast, yet sparsely populated territories (Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territory) combined.
Q? is almost 50% larger than the next largest province, Ontario, which has a total land area of 917,741 sq km. Neither province comes close to the size of Canada’s largest territory however. Nunavut, in the north of Canada has a total area of 1,936,113 sq km and makes up 21% of Canada’s total area.
