Biophysics of health and disease

  • What is the history of biophysics?

Biophysics is a relatively young branch of science; it arose as a definite subfield in the early to mid-20th Century.
However, the foundations for the study of biophysics were laid down much earlier, in the 19th Century, by a group of physiologists in Berlin..

  • Why is biophysics important to medical laboratory scientists?

In addition to the discovery of DNA and its structure, biophysics techniques were also used to create vaccines, develop imaging techniques such as MRI and CAT scans to help doctors diagnose diseases, and create new treatment methods such as dialysis, radiation therapy, and pacemakers..

The biophysical function and performance of PS, in health and disease, are directly influenced by its composition, structure and mechanical properties. This

What Awards does the Biophysics Society offer?

The Society also offers travel awards to its annual meeting, poster awards at Society-sponsored meetings, as well as other scientific conferences.
The society sponsors "Biophysics Awards" at high school science fairs across the nation.

What committees does the Biophysical Society have?

The committees are:

  • What is computational biophysics?

The Computational Biophysics Section of the Laboratory of Computational Biology is a group of researchers, led by Dr.
Bernard Brooks, who use high-performance computing and macromolecular simulation to investigate problems in biophysics and chemistry.

    What is the Biophysical Society?

The Biophysical Society is an international scientific society whose purpose is to lead the development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics.
Founded in 1958, the Society currently consists of over 7,500 members in academia, government, and industry.
Although the Society is based in the United States, it is an international organization.

    Viral disease in animals

Bluetongue disease is a noncontagious, insect-borne, viral disease of ruminants, mainly sheep and less frequently cattle, yaks, goats, buffalo, deer, dromedaries, and antelope.
It is caused by Bluetongue virus (BTV).
The virus is transmitted by the midges Culicoides imicola, Culicoides variipennis, and other culicoids.

    Medical condition

Gaucher's disease or Gaucher disease (GD) is a genetic disorder in which glucocerebroside accumulates in cells and certain organs.
The disorder is characterized by bruising, fatigue, anemia, low blood platelet count and enlargement of the liver and spleen, and is caused by a hereditary deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase, which acts on glucocerebroside.
When the enzyme is defective, glucocerebroside accumulates, particularly in white blood cells and especially in macrophages.
Glucocerebroside can collect in the spleen, liver, kidneys, lungs, brain, and bone marrow.

    Terminal recessive genetic condition

Lafora disease is a rare, adult-onset and autosomal recessive genetic disorder which results in myoclonus epilepsy and usually results in death several years after the onset of symptoms.
The disease is characterized by the accumulation of inclusion bodies, known as Lafora bodies, within the cytoplasm of the cells in the heart, liver, muscle, and skin.
Lafora disease is also a neurodegenerative disease that causes impairment in the development of brain (cerebral) cortical neurons and is a glycogen metabolism disorder.
