Biosafety lecture notes pdf

  • Biosafety is the discipline that addresses the safe handling and containment of infectious microorganisms and hazardous biological materials.
This includes how we handle animals, plants, cell culture, bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and public health crisis such as CoVID-19.
Lecture 2. Dr.AyadM.J. Biosafety &Security. First Stage /Biology Dept. 1 Laboratory biosafety manual, Third edition (WHO, 2004). Biorisk management

What are the Recommended laboratory biosafety levels?

There are four recommended laboratory biosafety levels.
The biosafety levels consist of laboratory practices, safety equipment, and facilities combinations which are specifically appropriate for the operations performed, suspected routes of biohazardous material transmission, and laboratory function or activity.

What is a biosafety manual?

This Biosafety Manual has been developed to provide general policies and procedures when working with biological agents at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Each individual laboratory must supplement this manual with laboratory specific policies; procedures and training that will minimize the specific risks present in the laboratory.

Who is responsible for biosafety?

Although we are all responsible for our own safety, the Principal Investigator is responsible for ensuring that persons working in their laboratory are adequately trained.
This Biosafety Manual has been developed to provide general policies and procedures when working with biological agents at the University of Nevada, Reno.
