Biosafety and biosecurity notes

  • How important is the biosafety and security?

As part of this battle, biosecurity is of vital importance, since it is responsible for preventing risks to health and to the environment from exposure to biological agents that cause disease.
Biosafety is the name given to the rules and barriers established to prevent biological risk..

  • Why is biosecurity and biosafety important?

Both aim to keep dangerous pathogens safely and securely inside the areas where they are used and stored, yet they mitigate against different risks..

Biosafety assessments address the likelihood and severity of inadvertent exposure and of release of the biological agent. Biosecurity assessments address theft, loss, and intentional misuse of a biological agent.
Chapter 1.1.1 Management of veterinary diagnostic laboratories outlines the overall requirements and responsibilities to be addressed in the management of

How should a national biosafety and biosecurity framework (NBBF) be implemented?

A comprehensive evaluation of existing regulatory arrangements, including:

  • the identification of any gaps
  • forms part of the recommended step-wise approach to implementing a national biosafety and biosecurity framework (NBBF) and is described in more detail later in this document (see Section 3:
  • STEP 2).
  • Should biosafety and biosecurity be governed by an oversight committee?

To ensure a fully integrated and comprehensive approach to risk management at the institutional level, some countries have mandated the formation of an oversight committee and the designation of individuals to oversee the totality of a facility’s biosafety (and also biosecurity) practices (17).
