X-ray computed tomography

  • How are X-rays produced in computed tomography?

As the patient passes through the CT imaging system, a source of x rays rotates around the inside of the circular opening.
A single rotation takes about 1 second.
The x-ray source produces a narrow, fan-shaped beam of x rays used to irradiate a section of the patient's body (Figure 4).Sep 28, 2020.

  • Medical x-rays are used to generate images of tissues and structures inside the body.
If x-rays traveling through the body also pass through an x-ray detector on the other side of the patient, an image will be formed that represents the “shadows” formed by the objects inside of the body.
CT scans can diagnose possibly life-threatening conditions such as hemorrhage, blood clots, or cancer. An early diagnosis of these conditions could potentially be lifesaving. However, CT scans use x-rays, and all x-rays produce ionizing radiation.
