  • What does IEC 62443 stand for?

The ISA/IEC 62443 series of standards define requirements and processes for implementing and maintaining electronically secure industrial automation and control systems (IACS).
These standards set best practices for security and provide a way to assess the level of security performance..

  • What is IEC 62443 3 3?

IEC 62443-3-3 System Security Requirements and Security Levels documents the seven foundational requirements for achieving robust system cybersecurity..

  • What is IEC 62443 4 2?

ISA-62443-4-2 defines the technical cyber security requirements for components that make up control systems as described in ISA-62443-3-3.
An overview of component types will be given along with an overview of additional technical requirements that are part of the newer standard..

  • What is IEC in cyber security?

IEC 62443 is an international series of standards that address cybersecurity for operational technology in automation and control systems.
The standard is divided into different sections and describes both technical and process-related aspects of automation and control systems cybersecurity..

  • Why use IEC 62443?

The benefits of IEC 62443 certification for end users include assurance that their industrial control systems are designed to meet the highest levels of network and cyber security.
They are free of known vulnerabilities and protected against known cyber threats..

  • A cybersecurity standard is a set of guidelines or best practices that organizations can use to improve their cybersecurity posture.
Organizations can use cybersecurity standards to help them identify and implement appropriate measures to protect their systems and data from cyber threats.
  • IEC 62443-3-3 System Security Requirements and Security Levels documents the seven foundational requirements for achieving robust system cybersecurity.
  • The IEC 62443 standards provide cybersecurity reference architectures, direction for security processes, requirements, technology, controls, security acceptance/factory testing, product development, security lifecycles, and a cybersecurity management system (CSMS).
  • This document strives to define a set of engineering measures that will guide an organization through the process of assessing the risk of a particular IACS and identifying and applying security countermeasures to reduce that risk to tolerable levels.

IEC 62443 helps remove technical barriers to trade by establishing consistent cyber security standards. It provides guidance on securing the supply chain and provides a risk-based approach to industrial cyber security.

International communication protocol standard

IEC 61850 is an international standard defining communication protocols for intelligent electronic devices at electrical substations.
It is a part of the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) Technical Committee 57 reference architecture for electric power systems.
The abstract data models defined in IEC 61850 can be mapped to a number of protocols.
Current mappings in the standard are to Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS), GOOSE [see section 3, Terms and definitions, term 3.65 on page 14], SV or SMV, and soon to web services.
In the previous version of the standard, GOOSE stood for Generic Object Oriented Substation Event, but this old definition is still very common in IEC 61850 documentation.
These protocols can run over TCP/IP networks or substation LANs using high speed switched Ethernet to obtain the necessary response times below four milliseconds for protective relaying.
