Consumer grade wearables, such as the Apple Watch and Fitbit bands, can also gather health data that can be shared with doctors

These devices are commonly used by the wearer to monitor trends in, for example, their exercise or sleep ( box 1 )

Given that wearable software and hardware components are validated through evaluation frameworks and regulatory pathways, the duty of our medical community and US federal agencies, such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, will be to agree on the best practice clinical guidelines and meaningful use criteria for these devices
