How does civil law work?

Civil law disputes between individuals are conducted in court in a different way to that of the criminal law.
In civil law claims at court, each party gathers, files and serves their evidence.
That evidence is then heard before a Magistrate or Judge in court who ultimately determines the legal issues and makes orders in favour or against a party.
