Parties - in a civil trial are the plaintiff and defendant; in a criminal trial they are the prosecutor (representing the people of the state or local political subdivision), and the defendant (the person charged with the crime);

In a criminal law case, the person who committed the crime is called the defendant. The defendant is represented by a defense attorney or public defender. The person who represents the government in a criminal law case is called the prosecutor. The prosecutor is the one who files the charges against the defendant.

Crimes can be generally separated into four categories: felonies, misdemeanors, inchoate offenses, and strict liabilityoffenses.
