General Defences – Introduction A general defence is one that applies to a range of offences, but not all e. duress is a general defence, but it doesn’t apply to murder or attempted murder. To be contrasted with a special defence, which will only apply to a specific crime.

This defense applies in only very limited circumstances.
Another category of defenses applies when the defendant committed the crime but argues that he or she was justified in doing so.
The most commonly recognized of these defenses are self-defense and defense of others.

An imperfect defense reduces the severity of the offense; a perfect defense results in an acquittal.
If the basis for a defense is an issue of fact, it is called a factual defense.
If the basis for a defense is an issue of law, it is called a legal defense.
