An Act to authorise for taking measurements of convicts and other persons for the purposes of identification and investigation in criminal matters and to preserve records and for matters connected therewith and incidental thereto. 1. (1) This Act may be called the Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022.
The Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022, empowers police officers or prison officers to collect certain identifiable information from convicts or those who have been arrested for an offence.
The
Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act 2022 has come into force after being passed by Parliament in April 2022. It replaces the Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920, a colonial-era law, and authorizes police officers to take measurements of people convicted, arrested, or facing trial in criminal cases.The
Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022 provides for legal sanction for taking appropriate body measurements of persons who are required to give such measurements and will make the investigation of crime more efficient and expeditious and will also help in increasing the conviction rate.
The Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022, empowers police officers or prison officers to collect certain identifiable information from convicts or those who have been arrested for an offence. This information could include finger-prints, photographs, iris and retina scan, biological samples and their analysis, and behavioural attributes.
Like the Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920, the new

2022 provides for legal sanction to law enforcement agencies for the collection of measurements. The purpose is to create a useable database of these measurements.
