Society is a process not a product

  • Are we a product of society?

Human beings are social creatures, and as such, their development and behavior are greatly influenced by the society in which they live.
Society provides individuals with the necessary framework for social interaction, communication, and learning.Mar 29, 2020.

  • What is society according to MacIver and Page?

MacIver and Page, (1950) defined “society as a web of relations, a complex system of usages and procedures, of authority and mutual aid of many groupings and divisions, of control of human behaviour and of liberties”.

  • What is the society as a process?

Society is defined as a web of social relationships.
These social relationships may be understood by the kind of interactions they exhibit.
The ways in which individuals and groups interact and establish social relationships is called the 'social process'..

  • Giddings in his book “The Elements of Sociology” stated that, “Society is the union itself, the organization the sum of formal relations in which associating individuals are bound together.”
Society is a process and not a product: “Society exists only as a time sequence. It is becoming, not a being; a process and not a product” (Maclver and Page, 1956). In other words, as soon as the process ceases, the product disappears. The product of a machine endures after the machine has been scrapped.

Is Society a complex system?

This ever-changing, complex system we call society

It is the web of social relationships

And it is always changing”

“Society is a complex of forms or processes each of which is living and growing by interaction with the others, the whole being so unified that what takes place in one part affects all the rest”

Is Society a process or a product?

It may be noted in passing that it is not without reason that one who studies society must take into account these two views of society

“Society exists only as a time-sequence

It is a becoming, not a being; a process, not a product”

This is the essence of society

What is the difference between society and society in general?

Thus, a society is different from society in general; ‘a society is any organisation that enables people to carry on a common life

It is concrete, having physical reality and is an aggregate of persons while society is abstract and is something more than an aggregate of individuals and the sum of individuals

Journal article from 'The American Archivist' published in 2005

More Product, Less Process: Revamping Traditional Archival Processing is a 2005 archival science article written by Mark A.
Greene and Dennis Meissner that first appeared in the Fall/Winter 2005 issue of The American Archivist.
The paper argues that traditional archival processing is too slow, and advocates for the use of minimal processing in order to reduce backlogs and provide access to archival collections as quickly as possible.
The ideology presented in the article, abbreviated as MPLP, has since been widely adopted in modern archival theory with subsequent praise directed primarily towards the ability to increase user accessibility without prohibiting the option for future processing.
