The 2021–22 season was Sunderland's 143rd year in their history and fourth consecutive season in League One.
Along with the league, the club competed in the FA Cup, the EFL Cup and the EFL Trophy.
The season covers the period from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022.

The Sunderland Empire Theatre is a large theatre venue located in High Street West in Sunderland, North East England.
The theatre, which opened in 1907, is owned by City of Sunderland Council and operated by Ambassador Theatre Group Ltd, on behalf of Sunderland Empire Theatre Trust.
