  • What is page level compression in SQL Server?

The whole page is reviewed; each column is evaluated for prefix compression, and then all columns are evaluated for dictionary compression.

  • What is SQL data compression?

For rowstore tables and indexes, use the data compression feature to help reduce the size of the database.
In addition to saving space, data compression can help improve performance of I/O intensive workloads because the data is stored in fewer pages and queries need to read fewer pages from disk.Oct 27, 2023.

  • Use Transact-SQL

USE AdventureWorks2022; GO ALTER TABLE Person.Person REBUILD PARTITION = ALL WITH (DATA_COMPRESSION = NONE); GO.
  • Data compression ratio is defined as the ratio between the uncompressed size and compressed size: Thus, a representation that compresses a file's storage size from 10 MB to 2 MB has a compression ratio of 10/2 = 5, often notated as an explicit ratio, 5:1 (read "five" to "one"), or as an implicit ratio, 5/1.

Which data types are supported by Unicode compression?

Unicode compression supports the fixed-length nchar (n) and nvarchar (n) data types.
Data values that are stored off row or in nvarchar (max) columns aren't compressed.
Unicode compression is not supported for nvarchar (max) data even if it is stored in row.
However, this data type can still benefit from page compression.

Limitations and restrictions

System tables can't be enabled for compression. If the table is a heap, the rebuild operation for ONLINE mode is single threaded

Permissions

Requires ALTER permission on the table or index

Use SQL Server Management Studio

In Object Explorer, expand the database that contains the table that you want to compress and then expand the Tables folder. To compress an index
